The metal detector I use is the Minelab Explorer XS and to be perfectly honest with you, in my years of hunting I have NEVER found a machine that will do what the Explorer can. I use to have as high as 3 detectors in my closet to hunt with. I have only one now. This machine is totally amazing. It has the best target separation I have ever seen. There is not a place that is to trashy for the XS! I have never switched coils. I still run the stock coil and will continue to. I feel it was made for this machine and works best with it. I also have the X-1 Probe installed on my detector, and I would not want to think of what it would be like to have to hunt without that. It is a lifesaver! I use Gray Ghosts headphones.

I run my detector in iron mask -10 and very seldom change that. I use semi-auto sens 98% of the time. I have never had a problem with finding coins using it. I have never listened to a target found by another detectorist that I couldn't hear. So to me its best to let the detector choose the sens level for me, and I can concentrate on my hunting. I do run my gain high at 9 I am saving 10 for when my hearing totally goes! This really works good for me in the high trash areas as I can still hear a deep coin through all the noise of the pulltabs and crap! I just have to keep checking my depth meter on some coin signals. My variability is on 8. I also adjust my threshold tone to just where I can hear it, and set the tone of it a little lower sounding. I keep it set on deep and fast all the time, that never changes. And that is how I run my Explorer. I am a firm believer in not over adjusting. Keeping things simple and paying close attention to what my detector is telling me!
